Frequently Asked Questions
Learn More About Guided Days on the Madison or other Montana Rivers
FAQs
-
All fly fishing gear can be supplied (rod/reel, leaders and tippet, flies). However, if you wish to bring your own, give us a call, and we can help get you set up for your Montana guided fly fishing trip on the Madison or other rivers.
-
Tipping follows most service industry standards. Guides rely on their tips and summer wages heavily! 10% for just an okay day, 15% for pretty good, and 20% if your guide did everything in their power to make your day great!
-
All gear needed for fly fishing is provided. However, if you’d like to bring your own gear, a 9ft 6 weight is our go-to, all-around rod. Lighter-weight rods (4wt, 5wt) can be utilized for smaller dry fly rigs or spring creek fishing. Not sure what you have will work in Montana? Give us a call.
-
All full-day guided fly fishing trips include a deli-style lunch, as well as a cooler stocked with water and non-alcoholic beverages. Please let your guide know ahead of time if you have specific dietary concerns or preferences, so we have time to prepare.

No matter what time of year or what the forecast says, always bring warm layers! Montana weather can be difficult to predict. Think fleece or a puffy, and a rain jacket… even in summer. Chaco and Teva-type sandals are popular footwear in the summer months, but any water shoe or sneaker will suit you.
If you have waders, consider bringing them as they can provide extra protection and offer more flexibility in wading opportunities. (If the forecast requires waders and you do not have them, they can be rented in town for a daily rate)
Other important items:
Sunglasses (polarized are best)
Ball cap or another sun hat
Sunblock (!)
Rain jacket

A Montana fishing license is required for all anglers 12 years old and up. You can purchase a license online, or at Shedhorn Sports or one of the fly shops in town.
